New Book: Song of Light by Sandra Saidak

My friend Sandy has a new book out I thought you might enjoy.  What a beautiful cover! Who can resist music, magic, and adventure?

Song of Light by Sandra Saidak

Fleeing a cursed land, Salia finds salvation in a world of magic. But she must fight to save her new home from the impending dark forces that threaten to consume it.

Sold into servitude by her father to settle his debts with a brutal innkeeper, Salia dreams of a better life. Desperate for a way out, she finds her escape in a portal to another world… a world where magic still flourishes.

Welcomed by a band of wildlings into a land of eternal childhood, time passes happily, until the injury of one of her friends forces Salia to seek help at the temple of healing. There she meets Alyssa, an elven warrior princess who encourages Salia to explore the wider world with her.

As Salia embraces her exciting new life of adventure, she is able to grow and blossom. A sense of belonging and acceptance fills her with the belief that she’s found her true home in the elf kingdom of Evintyr.

But the Darkness, an evil force that drained Salia’s former world of magic, now threatens her new home with the same fate. As Salia finds herself thrust into a race to save this new world, can she prevent it from falling victim to a similar destiny?

Author’s note:

I’ve loved escaping into other worlds for as long as I can remember.  Sometimes, through movies, books and songs, I found worlds created by others.  Sometimes, I created them myself.

The upside of this quirk was two ready-made careers.  The first is teaching high school English so I could share my passion for stories with the people I believe need it the most: teenagers.  The second is writing, so I could share the worlds I created with everyone.

While not all my fantasy life centers on history, all of my early writing did, probably because of the huge impact Jean Auel and her Earth’s Children series had on me.  Despite the rich niche of prehistoric fiction, I couldn’t get enough of it.  More properly, I couldn’t find the exact story I wanted to read.

So, I wrote it.  And in 2011, published Daughter of the Goddess Lands, Book 1 in my Kalie’s Journey series.  I added alternative history with From the Ashes and That This Nation Might Live, and historical fantasy with The Seal Queen.

This year, I am taking the plunge into epic fantasy, with Songs of Light, and for the first time, indulging my passion for ballads and folk songs, and the healing power of music.

When not writing, I enjoy dancing, music, attending science fiction conventions and hearing from my readers

Great YA Romantic Fantasy Movie: Every Day

Every Day is a unique romantic fantasy movie about a girl who falls for a being that inhabits a different body every day. You can watch it streaming on Hulu now.

Rhiannon is a timid girl who’s jock bf pretty much just uses her for a placeholder so he has a girlfriend to stay sober at parties and drive his drunk butt home. But one day, when she asks him to go on a day trip with her, he accepts. They have an awesome time together–the best day of her life–until she goes to school the next day and he doesn’t remember anything about it.

Soon, Rhiannon starts meeting all these strange kids her age. They each know more about her than they should and start talking about switching bodies. Thinking it’s an elaborate scheme by her friends to tease her, she ignores them at first. But as more and more details add up, she realizes maybe there is truth to the tale.

I absolutely loved this film. It’s strange and wonderful and an adventure that I didn’t know how would end.

It brings up some scary questions. Do we love someone because of the body they come in or because of their soul? What would you do if the love of your life woke up as someone else each morning? Would you still love them in another body? How far would you go to find them when they leaped? And what if that new person has a girlfriend, a medical condition, or a plane ride to deal with? How would you protect your love and yourself?

Top 5 Holiday Romance Films

Hiya Sweet Dreamers! It’s Emmy here.
You know, during the holidays, I just want to cuddle by the fire and watch movies, Since Rob hasn’t been cast in a major motion picture yet, I settle for holiday romance flicks.

Here are my top five:

  1. While You Were Sleeping I never would have picked Bill Pullman for the heartthrob type, but he does a great job in this film. Sandra Bullock is one of my favorite romantic comedy actresses and she plays a great poor gal in this show. How did they get her hair to look so dirty? Peter Gallagher (although I prefer him as the heartthrob) is actually funny in this, as are the cast that plays his family.
  2. The Holiday Kate Winslet is so cute in this movie. I love her adventure to California, where she meets an old movie guy. Their relationship is so cute, I just want to squeeze them up in a big hug! I never thought Jack Black could play a descent love interest, but they somehow made it work here without being creepy. As for fabulous Cameron and Jude, well they are both gorgeous, it’s not a shock that they get together. I like how they find each other and how she discovers his real secret isn’t as underhanded as she thinks.
  3. Love Actually There are so many stories going on in this one, it’s hard to choose my favorite. I love Hugh Grant in this. He is actually a stand up guy… not a womanizer like he plays in a lot of films. Colin Firth is lovable in a sad way. And I always hope that little boy will get to his girl in time! Not to mention a great soundtrack featuring the song that has become one of my favs… “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
  4. White Christmas Nothing like a great classic to bring a smile to your face. I love the relationship between Danny Kaye & Bing Crosby. I like seeing into their day to day show business lives. Danny Kaye has to be one of the best looking men of that time. I think he gets overlooked because he is usually playing the comedy relief, but he is my favorite of the era. My favorite scene is Rosemary Clooney, in the club, floor-length black dress that looks like it was painted on, long silver gloves, hair sculpted into that perfect curl, signing… “Love You Didn’t Do Right By Me.” And this movie pushed me to look up a word!  Yes, that’s right… I was totally baffled when he said “snood”. Turns out it’s a woman’s hair accessory.
  5. Emma circa 1996 While not a Christmas movie, per se, Emma does go to a dinner in the snow and attends a few Christmas events during the movie. Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightly, couldn’t have been cast better. One of my favorite scenes is at the holiday dinner when Mr. Knightly says, “And she (her baby niece) looks so fetching in the arms of her Aunt.” And then he tries to make amends for their earlier fight. It’s great to see the families gathering for holiday festivities.

So now that I’ve shared mine, why not tell me and the other Sweet Dreamers, what your favorite holiday films are.
